INTERNATIONAL BEST-SELLING AUTHOR APPOINTED TO ROCK HILL PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Local award-winning novelist, Patrick P. Long, is latest member to join committee
(November 11, 2021) St. Louis, MO – The Rock Hill Public Library has been providing unparalleled service to local book lovers, authors and educators for 77 years. Located at 9811 Manchester Road, the library houses over 28,000 volumes and employs one full-time employee and seven part-time employees.
Seeking to build community and foster lifelong learning, the Rock Hill Public Library approached local author, Patrick P. Long, to join the Board of Trustees to assist in this mission. Excitedly, Long accepted the position in October and the library kicked off his new affiliation with an online event called “Author Talk.” Long discussed his award-winning memoir, “Ordinarily Extraordinary,” with an interactive Q&A session afterwards and gave away a copy of his international best-selling book to an unsuspecting winner.
“I am honored to join the Rock Hill Public Library Board of Trustees. I look forward to being a part of such an amazing committee which continues to strengthen efforts to build community and promotes ongoing education for the benefit of all,” said Patrick P. Long.
The Rock Hill Public Library Board of Trustees is currently led by President Stephanie Van Stee, Vice President Karen Shoulders and Treasurer Laurie Murphy.
About Rock Hill Public Library
The need for a library in the Rock Hill community became apparent in the early 1940s. On November 19, 1943, representatives from several prominent local organizations came together at Fairfax House to form the Rock Hill Village Library Association. The Rock Hill Public Library first opened its doors on June 4, 1944 and was staffed by volunteers. A 10¢ tax was submitted and approved in 1947, giving the library a solid fiscal base from which to grow. Following the passage of this tax, a Board of Trustees was formed to manage the library’s budget and a full-time librarian was hired. Currently, the library houses over 28,000 volumes and employs one full-time employee and seven part-time employees. The library has provided 77 years of service to the community to date. EVERY DAY IS FATHER’S DAY: TIPS FOR SINGLE DADS
International best-selling author, Patrick P. Long, and father of four offers useful tips to make daily life easier for single dads
(June 8, 2021) St. Louis, MO – Celebrated annually, on the third Sunday of June in the United States, Father's Day recognizes and honors fathers as well as celebrates their influence in society. While fathers are recognized once a year, the father who is present in their children’s lives every day makes Father’s Day every day. This is especially true for single fathers who provide and care solely for their children daily which can often be stressful and challenging. International best-selling author of “Ordinarily Extraordinary,” Patrick P. Long, offers practical tips to help single fathers decrease stress and manage their lives with greater ease.
Based on his real-world experience raising four young children after his wife’s death two years ago, Long instantly became a fulltime, single dad. Long quickly discovered he needed to simplify daily tasks and routines in order to decrease household stress and provide more quality time for himself and his children.
“Trying to match socks, while doing laundry, for four children was annoying and time-consuming. It also became difficult to determine which pair of socks belonged to which child. So, I bought each kid new socks that were all unique to each child. It made sorting and putting away socks so easy, saved time and eliminated frustration. The more things you can simplify, as a single dad, the more time you have which equates to less stress,” stated Patrick P. Long. Here are a few additional tips from Long for single dads:
· Simplify: Ditch the pjs. Pajamas create more laundry and eat up more time in the morning when getting ready for school. Get your kids showered and ready the night before. Put them in clothing they can sleep in that will not wrinkle so they can get up and moving in the morning, saving time and stress.
· Ask for Help: This is not a sign of weakness or shortcoming. Others want to contribute. Family and friends want to help those they love. Let them take the kids for haircuts, clothes shopping, soccer practice or to the movies. It gives your kids a chance to interact with others, who are not dad, and it’s beneficial for you to have time to yourself.
· Self-Care: Definitely make the most of your time together with your kids, but also make time for yourself. Have someone babysit so you can go out with the guys, go for a run, see a movie alone or whatever you enjoy doing. Self-care is so important and is a good example to set for your kids. Besides, you won’t be any good to your kids if you aren’t good to yourself.
· Lose the Label: Ditch the traditional “Dad” stereotype. You are now a hybrid of mom and dad. Not only do you provide income and do the yard work, but also the housework now. However, it’s important to provide emotional support for your children as well. Be open so they feel safe coming to talk to you about difficult things and observe how your kids feel and act each day so you can adjust your response. Discipline and accountability are important to instill in your children also.

MOTHERLESS ON MOTHER’S DAY: HELPING YOUR CHILDREN COPE
International best-selling author, Patrick P. Long, and father of four children shares how he helps his kids cope each Mother’s Day since their mother's death
(April 28, 2021) St. Louis, MO – Mother's Day is the third most popular holiday in the world behind Christmas and Easter. But what do you do when your children’s mother is now a memory? International best-selling author of “Ordinarily Extraordinary,” Patrick P. Long, offers practical tips to help ease the pain of this holiday for children.
Based on his real-world experience raising four young children after his wife’s death two years ago, Long rejects pity and finds inspiration in daily life, even as life continues to beset him and his children with ordeals that continuously challenge his positive tone.
Patrick P. Long says “Helping your children through this holiday when their mother has passed is difficult. I have discovered ways to help them cope and celebrate their mother on this day and every day.” Here are a few of Long’s suggestions:
Do not dwell on sadness and loss also known as “The Negative,” turn everything to “The Positive”
Have fun – Find alternate activities to keep their minds off things; cook dinner together (homemade pizza is great), create an obstacle course or build a sandbox in the backyard, do a day trip, etc.
Recognize each child is grieving and remembering Mom in their own way; give them the opportunity to share their feelings and thoughts openly
Discover and celebrate alternative moms (For example, aunts or other motherly role models in their lives: fill out cards for them during Mom’s Day projects at school or purchase/create a card/gift for them for the holiday; have this woman or women participate regularly in activities with them such as haircuts, grocery shopping, etc.)
Do not replace Mom: Celebrate her in different ways such as making a card, story or present and “send” it to her or leave it at her gravesite (depending on age of kids and what they like to do)

LOCAL AUTHOR GIVES BACK TO NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT HELPED HIM IN TIME OF NEED
International Best-Seller Patrick P. Long Returns Support to Camp Kesem at Upcoming Fundraising Event
(April 13, 2021) St. Louis, MO – Young adults helping children forced to grow up quickly due to a cancer-stricken parent is Camp Kesem’s mission. Having a hard time caring for his ailing wife, tending to four children and maintaining a job, Camp Kesem stepped in to help Patrick P. Long when his family needed it most.
“Camp Kesem was not only there for me, my wife and children during Melanie’s battle with cancer but even at the funeral showing support and taking care of my children while I was receiving condolences from attendees. In fact, they are still in our lives two years after her passing, helping me and my children carry on,” said Patrick P. Long. “Because they have been so supportive to us, I want people in similar situations to know that Camp Kesem is available to them and is such a blessing. In fact, these extraordinary young adults are friends. I am so grateful.”
Patrick P. Long’s book, “Ordinarily Extraordinary,” talks about his experience with Camp Kesem and he is speaking at their largest fundraiser, Make the Magic, this weekend which is being held virtually. Long’s testimony will detail his experience with Camp Kesem. Specifically, how if this camp weren’t available free of charge to his family through donations, his chil-dren would never have been able to attend nor receive the love, care and support of those that make up Camp Kesem.
"Having a parent with cancer is incredibly isolating and oftentimes requires these children to grow up faster than other kids," said Brittany Pace, co-director. "At Camp Kesem, we allow our campers to just be kids again. They can play games, get messy, and have fun for a week and escape the worry that comes with having a parent with cancer."
The Make the Magic event is designed to raise monies to help support the camp and its year-long activities for children who whose parents have been impacted by cancer. The goal of the event is not only to raise money for the organization, but to in-form the community about Camp Kesem's mission and impact. The money raised from this event is used to provide a week-long summer camp free of charge to children who have been affected by a parent's cancer as well as year-long outreach.
Make the Magic takes place online Saturday, April 17th at 5:30 pm for one hour. You can purchase tickets ranging from $15 - $30 on Camp Kesem’s St. Louis University Chapter website. If you are unable to attend and would like to donate you can also do so through the site.
Patrick P. Long has raised nearly $9,000 for Camp Kesem between the initial book launch and other fundraising campaigns. His book “Ordinarily Extraordinary,” a family’s journey through love and anger, life and death, hope and inspiration, continues to give a portion of all book proceeds to the non-profit.
